ROBERT KOUFFMAN

Robert Kouffman grew up in East Hampton, New York. A true East Ender, his family founded MKL, a thriving construction business. As a teenager, he worked after school, and summers, in the family construction company literally learning the business from the ground up and providing the foundation of knowledge and understanding of construction and commercial issues that are invaluable to his legal practice today.

Mr. Kouffman received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Northeastern University in 1973. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served for five years as a communications officer, attaining the rank of Captain prior to his honorable discharge and his enrollment in the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law. He graduated with his Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1982.

In 1982 Mr. Kouffman joined the law firm of Wilson Bave Conboy & Bave in Yonkers, New York, as an associate. His principal responsibilities focused on defendant’s negligence matters and litigation, representing the firm’s principal clients; insurance companies.

In 1984 Mr. Kouffman founded the Kouffman & Klieger, Esqs. law firm in Wall Street, New York. A true general practice, the firm handled a wide range of matters, beginning with transactional commercial real estate, criminal defense and trial advocacy. The firm created offering plans and represented a range of clients from various tiers of the real estate corporate community from both the buyer and the seller side. The firm stewarded conversions of commercial properties into coops and condominiums while working with the New York State Attorney General on these prospectuses.

In 1985 Mr. Kouffman joined the Brooklyn Bar and was on the panel for plaintiff’s negligence cases. During this period he gained invaluable litigation expertise in a wide range of areas.

Mr. Kouffman was called upon to try civil litigation cases, specifically in the personal injury field, now representing clients against the insurance firms he had previously defended providing him with a unique 360 understanding of advocacy in this area. As well, he was called upon to litigate contract disputes and landlord tenant matters.

In addition, during this period, Mr. Kouffman was appointed an 18b public defender and became criminal defense attorney in the New York City criminal courts providing a unique opportunity, forging his trial skills, in the most competitive legal arena in the state.

Due to an ever-increasing demand from hometown clients, Mr. Kouffman opened a satellite law office in East Hampton, New York in 1987 and soon thereafter was appointed the Deputy Town Attorney for the Town of East Hampton. He now found himself with one foot firmly planted on the East End and the other in Manhattan.

In 1989 he sold his New York firm in order to focus full time on his East Hampton practice and to start a family. He was appointed the Prosecutor for the Village of East Hampton, whose principal responsibilities were to prosecute village building and zoning code violations, thereby creating what would be an invaluable career-long relationship with the village, town officials and local attorneys.

As Mr. Kouffman’s private practice grew, and his reputation filtered through the community, he began representing local builders, due to his unique personal understanding of the construction business. He also represented individual before the very town boards he had previously advised, regarding land zoning and planning issues.

In 2011 he expanded his practice to Bridgehampton. The practice now focuses on Real Estate, Commercial matters, Construction Law, and Trusts and Estates. Underlying it all, are 30 years of practical and successful trial experience that provide his clients, when required, with a singular advocate.

Robert Kouffman is a member of The New York State and Suffolk County Bar Associations.
